East Coast Nature Reserve
This is the jewel-in-the-crown of Birdwatch Ireland's reserves in Co. Wicklow. It comprises an 89 hectare area of marshland and birch woodland. It includes a hide and picnic tables, open to the public on a daily basis.
Hen Harriers, Marsh Harriers, Buzzards, Kestrels, Grey Herons, Kingfishers and Curlews are just some of the species recorded at this site in the few years of its existence.
It is of particular interest because it consists of extremely rare Calcareous Fen habitat. Wicklow is normally an area of acidic water type, but deep below the Blackditch Wood Reserve there is limestone, and freshwater from limestone aquifers bubbles to the surface, forming and extremely unique ecosystem.
