Newcastle: Castle Gatehouse, Church and Graveyard
The Gatehouse
The gatehouse is all that remains of the once impressive castle at Newcastle, Co. Wicklow.
The castle was one of two royal castles in Ireland from the Late Medieval period. It was the administrative centre for the areas on the edge of the Pale.
The castle gatehouse is on private land, but may be easily viewed from nearby.
St. Francis' Church and Graveyard
The church was once built of wood, but burned down, and was then rebuilt in stone, a result of the influence of English building methods. The ground beneath the church is artificially raised, with crypts built in to it.
